1990’s

Frank McIntosh passed away at 83 in 1990. The company would go on to be purchased by Clarion in the same year. Clarion’s vision for the company was to expand its presence in the car audio market, and McIntosh introduced automotive speakers in ’94.

Innovations in the Loudspeaker division continued throughout the decade. Releases included, McIntosh’s  first in-wall speaker system, the WS200, the XR290 loudspeaker with the first 4-woofer system and featured woofers, midrange, and tweeter columns and LP/HP® speaker technology.

The C39 preamplifier, MC7106 power amplifier, and the HT Series loudspeakers were launched, and comprised the first McIntosh THX-certified system. The HT Series features a patented, rotatable 3-tweeter array.

McIntosh introduced the MC2000 50th Anniversary Limited Edition vacuum tube power amplifier.  Enthusiasm for the classic styling was at an all-time high as a result.
